In 2016, the automotive industry recorded an impressive growth rate, + 9% over 2015, and the global average advanced 1.6%. At this rate, we can talk about an increase of 6-7% per year by 2020.

Until now, the sector has been driven by automakers, where Dacia-Renault has ranked 11th at European level, with nearly 360,000 units in 2016. At present, most of the growth comes from auto parts manufacturers.

In terms of the suppliers' market, it includes both its own production facilities, such as Daimler, as well as numerous contractors such as Delphi, Draexlmaier, Leoni or Continental, as well as small local contractors, which are in turn suppliers to large manufacturing companies.

As regards the development of the domestic market, the automotive industry appreciated in the fourth quarter of 2016 for new passenger cars (-1.7% Q1-Q2 to 32,500 units), but declined sharply in general due to the slowdown in second-hand sales, a total of 101,500 cars sold.

Year 2016 was one of the best in the last decade, with an increase in vehicle registrations of 17.4% to 510,000 units, of which new cars accounted for around 22% (115,000 units).

Also, the financial leasing market has increased by 25% in 2016, up to two billion euros, of which almost 77% are cars and light commercial vehicles. Companies accounted for 97% of total financial leasing customers, followed by individuals 2% and 1% of the public sector. The fleet of operational leasing vehicles increased by 8% to 60,000 vehicles in 2016 (about 13% of all new car registrations), with similar growth expectations for 2017.

The total turnover of the automotive sector in 2016 exceeded 20 billion euros, driven by exports, as the local market is relatively small and focuses on second-hand vehicles.

The main automotive companies operating in Romania are: Dacia (> EUR 4.2 billion in 2015), Ford (EUR 0.8 billion), and the Volkswagen Group as sole trader and distributor, with a a figure of 0.4 Euros.

The main manufacturers of components and consumables are: Continental (5 divisions), with a total turnover of 2.3 billion euros, Autoliv (security systems) with 0.7 billion euros, Takata (steering wheel) - 0.5 billion euros, Michelin - € 0.5 billion and Delphi with € 0.4 billion. According to the same study, the car market is dominated by the Dacia (Renault), Continental and other global presence groups (TRW, Bosch, Delphi, Ford and others). (source: ziuacargo.ro)
