In an era where environmental responsibility is paramount, businesses are increasingly seeking partners and facilities that align with their sustainability goals. Gebrüder Weiss România is leading this charge, having recently completed the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system at its newest logistics hub in Popești-Leordeni.

This strategic move underscores the company's deep commitment to drastically reducing its carbon footprint and significantly boosting the energy efficiency of its expansive operations.

Powering operations with clean energy

The newly installed system is an impressive array of 674 photovoltaic panels, strategically placed across the roof of the cross-dock and logistics warehouse. Boasting an installed capacity of 300 kWp and covering approximately 1,635 square meters, these panels are designed to generate substantial green energy primarily for self-consumption. The power produced will be instrumental in operating the office building and supporting the diverse activities within the warehouse, leading to more efficient internal energy consumption and potentially reducing operational overheads for businesses utilizing such facilities.

A strategic pilot project for future green expansion

Viorel Leca, General Manager of Gebrüder Weiss România, highlighted the Popești-Leordeni initiative as a crucial pilot project. It provides invaluable insights into the concrete impact of renewable energy on operational efficiency, laying the groundwork for ambitious future plans. The ultimate vision is for this facility to achieve 100% green status within the coming years. With an estimated self-consumption rate of 60% and an energy autonomy of approximately 20%, the system is projected to cut CO₂ emissions by a significant 48.85 tons annually. This project generates vital data for future strategic decisions on sustainability, including the potential expansion of similar initiatives to the Sibiu hub.

Comprehensive Commitment to Sustainability

This solar energy endeavor is just one component of Gebrüder Weiss's broader sustainability strategy. Locally, the company has already implemented other eco-friendly measures, such as utilizing electric vehicles for deliveries and actively testing an electric truck. On a group level, Gebrüder Weiss demonstrates a formidable commitment to green logistics, having developed 34 photovoltaic systems across Europe. These systems collectively produce an estimated 13,000 MWh of energy annually, resulting in a remarkable reduction of over 2,700 tons of CO₂ emissions. Such investments reflect a forward-thinking approach that benefits not only the environment but also offers significant long-term operational advantages, including reduced utility costs and enhanced energy independence for businesses considering these logistics hubs.
