The European ranking is headed by Luxembourg, which allocated 3.7% of GDP for 2016, followed by 3.5% in Hungary, 3.5% in Czech Republic, 3.4% in Slovakia and 3.1% in Romania.

At the opposite end, the three Member States with the lowest percentage of government spending on transport in 2016 were Cyprus (0.6%), Ireland (1.1%) and Malta (1.2%).

According to the report of the European Union Bureau of Statistics, government spending on transport includes expenditure on the management, regulation, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure (including road, water, rail and air, as well as any infrastructure for the transport of goods such as pipes).
